Before & After
We made the mistake
Of
fighting before we were properly engaged
And the mistake of talking about marriage
When we never kissed
And we still haven’t kissed
And all that time we spent together
And that night we spent all-night-together
When we wouldn’t go to bed together
When we took turns petting the cat
While it purred in its sleep on the floor
And we slowly closed our eyes and went to sleep
And then we made the mistake of dreaming together
And when we woke again in the morning
The mistake of cooking together
The mistake of experimenting with ingredients
And our friends called us passive-aggressive like a married couple
And we made the mistake of loving each other
Before and after our time was up.
